» PROJECT BRIEF: At the end of the semester, we had to make a series of at least five portraits, garnering all the things we had learned throughout the class, both in tools and also in practices. I decided to do a cohesive digital series based on characters from the novel I am writing. I used Procreate, and this series took about 80 hours.

PREVIEW
TITLE: SINFUL SNAKES
CATEGORY: DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION
PROGRAM: PROCREATE
DONE CIRCA FALL 2021

SINFUL SNAKES - YE DUYI:
The main character and also antagonist of my novel. Ye Duyi stands as a man whose sense of duality is strewn upon his own morally questionable moral compass.
The snake in his mouth, combined with his gaze to the camera as well as the snakes', represents the fact that he know he's in control and that the sense of power he holds is potent; aware of such, he will become that choking overbearing power and use it against those closest to him
Never having drawn snakes before, doing this series was definitely something outside of my comfort zone; although I tend to work in black and white ( with a very small range of colors added as can be seen here, either typically red or gold ), I really wished to push myself with this series.
Also being able to use the medium in which I found myself most comfortable in, I pushed my boundaries of what I know it means to make portraits. I wanted to go for an eerie feeling, an uncanny sense that, while enticed the reader with a beautiful character, left them feeling uncomfortable.
Ye Duyi is not his actual name, either; under the mirage of a surgeon, Ye Duyi had fled his home of Seoul to Shanghai, hiding from his birth name Seo Hyun-Ki.

DOCTOR YE DUYI:
Wanting to show a sense of duality, I wanted to show the mirage version of Duyi as well as the snake version, to add to this sense of eeriness. As an antagonist, it's important to be able to convince an audience perhaps he isn't all he is, to get them comfortable with the charming surgeon, only for him to be revealed as a villain.

Under his mirage, Ye Duyi is the Chief Medical Surgeon of the Medical Surgery Department at the International Hospital of Shanghai. In the daytime hours - and when he works overnights - he is a charismatic, charming veteran surgeon who knows what he's doing. He is set in his ways of doing his work as he always has, confident in his abilities to be able to conduct his work as needed.
Duyi has been a surgeon for nearing 20 years now, and will not put up with anyone trying to sway him from what he knows is best. With his office located in his wing on the seventh floor, it isn't a stretch to assume you may find Duyi in the hospital.

SINFUL SNAKES - LUO RENSHU:
Wanting to add to the Sinful Snakes category, I had chosen my secondary main character - also a villain - Luo Renshu. I wanted his to match with Duyi's and - as will be see later on - wanted to show a sense of interchangeability with them, as the red string of fate ties them together
Luo Renshu is a respectful philosopher. Owning his doctorate in philosophy, Renshu comes from a long line of artists in his family: his father being a renowned painter, and his mother a musician. It was no surprise when Renshu went into a similar field.
However, when Luo Renshu met Ye Duyi and became an assassin...
Now that, that was something no one saw coming.
The snakes bearing its fangs represent the protectiveness being a villain has coiled around Renshu, with all the other snakes being in defensive positions, as if protecting him from something.
Or from Ye Duyi.
